Upgrades to items are an essential element of enhancing your character. Upgrades increase the base damage and enhancements of items.

Weapons

Once the weapon has reached max upgrade, it can be rebuilt using a variety of different upgrade types to improve specific stats or to add bonuses and effects. Many of these upgrades can be re-applied at once, and their effects differ based on the quality of the weapon.

There are two Blacksmiths in the game that can perform these upgrades: Blacksmith Hewg in the Church of Elleh hub area, and Smithing Master Iji in the Road to the Manor Site of Grace. Both require different upgrade materials: Smithing Stones for standard weapons, and Somber Smithing Stones to alter the kind of damage a weapon can cause.

In general, it is recommended to upgrade weapon damage first, followed by armour defense, then the other secondary stats that are required by your build. It is not uncommon to see melee Druids upgrade their weapon prior to upgrading other gear. This helps maximize DPS. This is especially applicable to enchantments that enhance a weapon's stats and damage.

Armor

Item Upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of certain weapons, armors, trinkets, and gathering tools. These upgrades may also provide additional effects, like an increase in damage or a cosmetic enhancement. Item upgrades are available through crafting, buying from NPC vendors or loot drops, or as rewards for quests.

The armor can be upgraded by visiting the Armorer NPC and spending appropriate currency. Most of the time an item of armor will be upgraded to the next level after an upgrade is applied. Most armor types can be upgraded, but some items (such as the starter armour found in Great Sky Island) cannot.

The majority of armor upgrades boost the strength or defense of an item by just a little. However, some upgrade components can offer significant improvements in strength or defense, especially when upgrading an item that is epic.

In addition to increasing the base defense of an item, a few upgrades also give specific abilities that can be activated while wearing a piece of armor. These abilities can be useful in combat, such as granting a buff to attack speed or blocking. Some upgrades have effect that are passive and can be useful for example, the ability to reduce damage while wearing armor, or increasing the chance of avoiding an attack.

Based on the type of armor, upgrading an item can require several tries. If a player wants to upgrade Steelclash armor into Dragonscale and the first attempt will result in a brand new Dragonscale armor with an armor base defense of 59-67. The second attempt will result in a Dragonscale armor with an initial defense range of between 67 and 77.
